Groom's Checklist: Don't Miss a Thing on Your Wedding Day! March 30 2015

Compared to the bride, who can metamorph into bridezilla during wedding preparations, the groom tends to not sweat it. Actually, I wish all you grooms-to-be would sweat it just a little bit. Here at Knot Theory we often get last minute bow tie requests and super rushed orders for weddings. It drives the tailor a little nutty around wedding time!

So take care of your bow tie first, like how your fiance decides on what she's gonna wear first! For everything else, use this check list to make sure you didn't miss anything:


Groom’s Checklist

Twelve Months Before

Buy engagement ring and propose

Discuss date, hour of wedding as well as type of wedding

Decide on your wedding budget

Book Wedding Venue

Book Main Services (photographer, videographer, band, transportation, wedding planner, caterer, cake, florist)


Nine Months Before

Choose best man and ushers (1 usher is suggested for every 50 guests)

Start talking with fiancé about your guest list

Plan and book your honeymoon


Six Months Before

Shop for wedding rings (size & engrave)

Complete the guest list with full names, address and phone numbers

Select men’s attire (with help from fiancé, of course)

Finalize all honeymoon plans, reservations, flight arrangements, passports.

Get best man and ushers fitted for their attire and place order


Four Months Before

Meet with officiant to finalize ceremony details

Discus financial arrangements for flowers, traditionally the groom's responsibility

Check hotel availability for guests


Three Months Before

Check requirements for obtaining a marriage license

Pick up wedding rings, make sure they fit well, check engraving

Choose groom's attire and make necessary alterations

Decide on the bow ties and make custom requests if needed.

Assist parents with plans for the rehearsal dinner party


Two Months Before

Confirm honeymoon reservations

Purchase gifts for best man and ushers, given at rehearsal dinner

Purchase gift for fiancé if gifts are being exchanged


One Month Before

Write wedding speech

Attend stag party

List of essential pictures for photographer

Break into your dress shoes by wearing thick socks

Pick up marriage license with fiancé

If moving – pick up change of address cards at post office


Two Weeks Before

Gather documents and marriage license

Arrange details for your wedding day transportation

Go over all details, double check your honeymoon plans

Pack for honeymoon

Have your hair cut

Make sure that the best man and ushers know their duties

Go over seating with the ushers


The Day Before

Pick up tuxedo & shoes

Set up reception hall

Attend rehearsal & rehearsal dinner

Give gifts to attendants / parents


Your Wedding Day

Eat a healthy, balanced breakfast to sustain your energy

Allow yourself plenty of time to dress

Give best man the officiants fee (sealed in an envelope)

Ensure that the best man has the rings and marriage license

Have fun! It's your big day!
